What Did We Do Before The Cardboard Box?

Well, wooden crates were mainly used; however, this wasn’t scalable, nor was it healthy for your wallet. Quickbox provide efficient and affordable solutions, find out more today using our custom box calculator, but that’s enough about us, let’s get back to the history of the cardboard box…

When Were Cardboard Boxes Invented And Who Invented The Cardboard Box?

It is believed that the first commercial paper box came to be from the M. Treverton & Son firm in England, however the way we know cardboard boxes today was of German creation later in the same year. Surprisingly, this wouldn’t be patented for another 39 years in 1856 back in England.

The idea of producing a box from a single piece of pre-cut material came by accident in 1890 with Robert Gair. An accident at the time, but merely the eye opener that was required for a product that we all know so well today. Something that would go on to change the way cardboard is used forever.

The folding of paper bags was executed with a metal ruler, which through fault ended up slicing through the material. A demonstration which would give Robert the idea of cutting and bending the product in one action, allowing for mass production from one simple step. The application of this to the card would soon follow.

This was only the beginning of cardboard boxes. At this stage, the boxes were presented as blank canvasses. It is believed that Kellogg’s was the first company to use cardboard boxes for more than containment, with the addition of both marketing and labelling. So there you have it, the history of the cardboard box!
